Born and raised in Los Angeles, Tom left Southern California for a Biology degree from UC Santa Cruz that lead him to work as a field biologist in the Bering Sea for NMFS. After a surprise injury between assignments forced him to rethink his career, Tom's curiosity for adventure lead him to photography.
Several years later, that curiosity has taken him from the Yukon River Delta to the volcanic tops of Kaua’i to the North Woods of Maine and the alligator-infested rivers of Florida for a broad range of assignments with publications such as Audubon, Vanity Fair and Travel + Leisure.
Tom has been awarded prestigious honors in photography from American Photo, Communication Arts, and SPD as well as being named as one of PDN’s 30. He is on a short list of Contributing Photographers with Field & Stream Magazine and is a regular contributor with the magazine and its sibling publication, Outdoor Life.
Between assignments, he recently published his first book "This is Panama" which uncovers the Canal Expansion Project and Canal Operations.
